New low-lead copper-beryllium alloy: CuBe2 Emery Low Lead™

CuBe2 Emery Low Lead™ opens up new opportunities in the Swiss and Liechtenstein markets for applications requiring reduced lead content, without significant compromises in mechanical properties or machinability.

It is a low-lead copper-beryllium alloy that complies with the requirements of the RoHS Directive (Pb ≤ 1000 ppm) and is available both as a bar material and as a wire.

The alloy can be hardened by age hardening and offers mechanical properties and workability comparable to the well-known alloy M25 (CuBe2Pb2).

Key properties of CuBe2 Emery Low Lead™:

  • Compliant with RoHS (lead < 1000 ppm)
  • Very good machinability, comparable to alloy M25
  • High hardness and mechanical strength
  • Suitable for applications in connector technology, e.g. turned contact parts
  • Interesting alternative for precision components in the watchmaking industry

The alloy therefore opens up new possibilities for low-lead or lead-free applications, without compromising on performance and workability.

Nickel silver / ARCAP and Niclafor – versatile materials for precision applications

Another area of focus is copper-based alloys such as ARCAP and Niclafor, which belong to the group of nickel silver and alpacca materials.

These materials are specifically used in cases in which a combination of mechanical stability, corrosion resistance and good workability is required – particularly in the micromechanics and watchmaking industries.

Technical properties and benefits:

  • Non-magnetic material behaviour: suitable for applications in which magnetic influences must not impair function or precision
  • Good mechanical strength: reliable performance even under demanding operating conditions
  • High corrosion resistance: resistant to different environments and areas of application 
  • Very good forming and processing properties: suitable for complex geometries, deep drawing and precise further processing 
  • Good machining and polishing properties: enables high-quality surfaces for functional and visible components 
  • Very low lead content (REACH-compliant): suitable for applications with increased regulatory requirements 

Depending on the alloy version, properties can be tailored to specific requirements – for example in terms of formability, mechanical strength or area of application.

MP35N® Low Ti & N₂ – A high-performance alloy optimized for medical applications

MP35N® Low Ti & N₂ is an optimized variant of the MP35N® nickel-cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloy that is specially designed to meet the high demands of medical and implantable applications.

Its very low titanium and nitrogen content helps reduce inclusions and improve fatigue performance. Made by means of vacuum melting, this alloy combines very high mechanical strength with good ductility, a high degree of toughness and excellent corrosion resistance.

Its mechanical properties are achieved through a combination of work hardening, phase transformation and ageing.

Key features of MP35N® Low Ti & N₂:

  • Tensile strength up to 2068 MPa (300 ksi)
  • Good ductility and a high degree of toughness
  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Amagnetic behaviour
  • Low titanium and nitrogen content to reduce inclusions
  • Improved fatigue performance
  • Mechanical properties developed through work hardening, phase transformation and ageing

MP35N® Low Ti & N₂ is particularly suitable for cardiovascular and orthopaedic implants, dental applications, surgical instruments as well as implantable wires, tubes and electronic components for the medical sector.

L-605® – A superalloy for high-stress applications

Another area of focus is a cobalt-chromium-nickel-tungsten superalloy known for its performance in environments subject to high thermal, mechanical and tribological stresses.

Produced by means of vacuum induction melting (VIM), followed by electroslag remelting (ESR), this alloy is associated with high inclusional cleanliness and reliability. It combines high mechanical strength with excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures, up to 1093 °C, as well as excellent fatigue and wear resistance.

Biocompatible, amagnetic and compatible with several welding processes, L-605® meets the requirements of particularly demanding industrial and medical applications.

Key features of L-605®:

  • High mechanical strength
  • Excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures up to 1093 °C
  • Excellent fatigue resistance
  • Excellent resistance to wear, including seizure and cavitation
  • Good corrosion resistance, especially against hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and oxidizing agents
  • Biocompatible and suitable for medical applications
  • Amagnetic in all metallurgical states
  • Compatible with laser, plasma, resistance and TIG welding

L-605® is used in the manufacture of medical components such as stents, heart valves and electrodes. It is also suitable for aeronautical systems, combustion chambers and highly stressed springs.

Hastelloy® C-22 – Outstanding corrosion resistance in demanding environments

Hastelloy® C-22 is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium-tungsten alloy developed for applications exposed to particularly corrosive environments.

Its balanced composition of molybdenum, tungsten and chromium gives it excellent resistance to pitting attacks, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion in both oxidizing and reducing environments.

Its low carbon and silicon content limits carbide precipitation during welding and helps maintain high corrosion resistance in the welded state. This means that the alloy can be used after welding without the need for additional heat treatment.

Key features of Hastelloy® C-22:

  • Excellent corrosion resistance in oxidizing and reducing environments
  • Very high resistance to pitting attacks, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion
  • Excellent resistance to wet chlorine as well as to mixtures containing oxidizing acids and chloride ions 
  • Very good resistance to iron and copper chlorides, formic and acetic acids, sea-water and brines
  • High corrosion resistance in the welded state
  • Good thermal stability
  • Can be used after welding without additional heat treatment

Hastelloy® C-22 is used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, in the processing of acid mixtures, in environmental protection installations and in the pulp and paper industry. It is also suitable for the manufacture of reactor vessels, pumps, valves and membranes for ultra-high purity (UHP) valves and regulators used in the semiconductor, solar and medical technology sectors.
