Circular economy

Circular economy – keeping raw materials in circulation

Rather than wasting resources, we rely on closed material cycles – from raw material processing to reuse and recycling. Metalworking offers ideal conditions for this, which we systematically use through circular supply chains and contractually regulated return systems. Packaging, production waste and even wooden crates also flow back into closed material flows – partly in collaboration with local upcycling initiatives.

Circular economy instead of waste

The metal industry is a prime example of the circular economy – and we at the NOTZgroup systematically exploit this potential. Our goal: Closing cycles, conserving resources and promoting recycling.

The circular economy aims to replace the traditional linear economic model – the model of extraction, production and disposal – with a regenerative system. It strives for the sustainable use of resources.

Various business models have been developed to implement the principles of the circular economy, whereby we are particularly active in the circular supply chain and in recovery and recycling.

Further information on the circular economy can also be found on the website of the Federal Office for the Environment.

Circularity in metalworking

Our circular value creation begins with the processing of raw materials and does not end with the finished product. We focus on recycling metal and production scrap all the way back to raw material processing via indirect and, if possible, direct channels.

  • Taking back scrap from our customers – with further processing by selected recycling partners
  • An even shorter cycle is created with the contractually regulated return of production waste to suppliers. Brass waste is completely returned from certain workshops to the foundry cycle.

These measures reduce the consumption of primary raw materials and reinforce the sustainable supply chain.

Packaging and containers part of the cycle

We also design packaging and containers in line with the circular economy – especially with a view to the upcoming EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation:

  • Reusable container systems, e.g. through reusable conditioning between customers and production
  • Recyclable packaging materials for better recyclability
  • Consideration of environmental compatibility as a criterion when purchasing packaging materials
  • Sustainable transport packaging such as multiple-use wooden boxes

Holistic recycling: paper, wood and upcycling

For us, sustainability doesn’t end with metal:

  • Paper, PET, cardboard and wood are collected and recycled separately.
  • The life cycle of wooden boxes is even sublimated by using them for the manufacture of high-quality furniture. The local collaboration with
Rewood is a prime example of the upcycling of resources.

Boxes become pieces of furniture

”For our reSQUARE, reGRID and reCUBE furniture, we use waste wood from transport crates from Notz Metall AG in Brügg near Biel. These boxes once transported hardware for the watchmaking and medical technology industries, but today their boards give our furniture character and history.

Thanks to this partnership, we are reducing waste, saving resources and creating one-of-a-kind products with clear origins – entirely in keeping with the circular economy.”
